Why Some Students Start the Wrong Thing First

Why Some Students Start the Wrong Thing First

How to Teach What Comes Next

Have you ever watched a student:

  • Spend 20 minutes on the heading — but forget the body of the task?
  • Finish the fun part first, then panic during pack-up?
  • Try to start five things… and complete none?

These aren’t motivation issues — they’re executive function breakdowns in planning and prioritising.

This week in Thera-Scholars, we’re teaching students how to plan their work visually, so they know:

  • What comes first
  • What can wait
  • What’s most important

We’re using the Plan the Day Visual, paired with visual timer slots, to help students organise tasks with clarity and confidence.

Why This Matters:

Planning and prioritising affects:

✅ Transitions
✅ Task completion
✅ Self-confidence
✅ Time management
✅ Ability to handle multiple demands

When this skill is shaky, students:

❌ Rush the wrong parts
❌ Delay what feels hard
❌ Forget what matters most
❌ Feel constantly “behind”

This Week’s Tool: Plan the Day + Timer Visuals

This resource helps students:

  • Break a task or day into chunks
  • See what’s coming — and in what order
  • Match visual timers to each part
  • Reduce stress by building structure

Perfect for:

📘 Project time
✏️ Group rotations
📚 Homework planning
🎯 Independent learning sessions

📝 On Friday, students reflect on what part of their plan worked — and what to try differently next time.

SHS can help with personalised plans, embedded executive function routines, and daily success mapping.
