Teaching Kids to Notice Feelings Before They Boil Over
How Dash’s Emotion Thermometer builds self-awareness and emotional control
Many children go from zero to meltdown in what feels like a blink. One moment they’re calm… the next, they’re shouting, crying, or shutting down. It’s not that they’re ignoring early feelings — it’s that they often don’t notice them at all.
That’s why this week in Thera-Scholars, we’re helping your child build one of the most powerful emotional tools: self-monitoring.
Using Dash’s Emotion Thermometer, your child will learn to spot when feelings are starting to heat up — before they hit boiling point.
What is the Emotion Thermometer?
It’s a kid-friendly visual tool that helps children identify how big their feelings are getting by thinking in colours and temperatures:
🟢 Green = Calm, focused, happy
🟡 Yellow = Bothered, wiggly, frustrated
🔴 Red = Angry, out of control, overwhelmed
It’s not about labelling feelings as “bad” — it’s about noticing them early, so your child can choose what to do next.
Why is this skill so important?
🌱 Kids can’t regulate what they can’t recognise.
The Thermometer teaches that feelings don’t explode out of nowhere — they build. And if we can catch them when they’re still small (Yellow Zone), we can use calming tools before things feel out of control.

How to use it at home:
🎨 Print and colour it together — Let your child decorate their own thermometer. This helps them connect to the tool.
📍 Place it where they can see it — fridge, calm corner, or backpack.
💬 Check in regularly:
- “What zone are you in right now?”
- “What happened before it got to red?”
- “What helps cool you back to green?”
🧸 Use toys or TV characters:
“Was that character in the yellow or red zone when they slammed the door?”
Tip for parents:
Praise awareness, not just behaviour.
Instead of “Good job calming down,” try:
💬 “I love that you noticed you were heading into the red zone — that’s a brave thing to do.”
This builds emotional intelligence and confidence.
