Soothing Is a Skill — Not a Baby Thing

Soothing Is a Skill — Not a Baby Thing

Why comfort through the senses helps kids (and adults) feel safe and steady

When kids feel overwhelmed, we often ask: “What’s wrong?” or “What are you feeling?” But sometimes, the best question is:

💬 “What does your body need right now to feel safe?”

This week in Thera-Scholars, we’re exploring soothing strategies — not just talking about feelings, but meeting them with comfort through the five senses.

Because no matter how old we are, we all need ways to feel calm, grounded, and okay again. Soothing is not regression — it’s regulation.

What does “soothing” really mean?

It’s anything that helps your child feel safe in their body when emotions are too big, too fast, or too much.

Think of it as the emotional equivalent of a warm blanket — something familiar, gentle, and sensory-based.

Dash’s Soothing Cards focus on:

👀 Sight – calming colours, soft lighting, favourite books
👂 Sound – music, white noise, nature sounds
👃 Smell – lavender, vanilla, or a comfort object that smells like home
🤲 Touch – soft blankets, fidgets, pressure hugs, warm baths
👅 Taste – sips of water, crunchy snacks, minty gum

These aren’t rewards — they’re tools for emotional safety.

Why is this so important?

🧠 When kids are upset, their nervous system needs help to settle before they can talk, think, or problem-solve.

🧸 Soothing tools activate the body’s “calm down” button — and let kids feel supported instead of shamed

Try this at home:

📦 Create a Comfort Kit — let your child choose a few items for each sense and keep them in a small bag or box.

🎨 Use the Soothing Cards — this week’s printable lets them pick or draw what works best for their body.

🛑 Practise during quiet times, not just meltdowns — the more familiar the tools, the easier they are to reach for under stress.

💬 Model your own soothing habits

“I feel a bit anxious, so I’m going to light my favourite candle and sit quietly for a minute.”
