Self-Monitoring Shouldn’t Feel Like a “Gotcha”
Here’s What Works Instead
“Am I finished?”
“Did I do it right?”
“I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to…”
These are signs your student isn’t being cheeky — they’re still learning how to self-monitor.
Self-monitoring is an executive function skill that helps students: ✅ Notice what they’re doing
✅ Check if it’s working
✅ Adjust their effort or behaviour without needing to be told
This week in Thera-Scholars, we’re introducing a gentle visual cue to build this awareness:
🎯 The Check Yourself Colour Card
It helps kids check in on how they’re going before they finish — and gives them power over their own progress.
Why It Matters:
Students with self-monitoring difficulties often:
❌ Think they’re done when they’re halfway there
❌ Don’t realise they’ve missed a step
❌ Can’t tell if they’re on track or off-task
❌ Depend heavily on adults for feedback
Instead of shame or “gotcha” moments, we want to build habits of curiosity and awareness.

This Week’s Tool: Check Yourself Colour Card
It uses a simple red/yellow/green check-in to help students reflect on:
🟢 I’m focused and on track
🟡 I’m trying, but I might need to adjust
🔴 I’m off-track or stuck — I need help
It gives them a way to self-correct, not just wait for correction.
Try It With:
✏️ Writing or multi-step work
📚 Independent reading
🎨 Transitions or social expectations
🔁 Reflection time
You’ll get the student-facing visual tomorrow, and a reflection tool Friday to help them track their check-ins over the week.
📧 SHS can help embed self-monitoring systems in class or create visual supports for individual learners.
