Managing Distractions Isn’t About Demanding Focus – It’s About Building Awareness
“Stop getting distracted.”
“Focus!”
“Eyes on me!”
These are some of the most repeated phrases in any classroom — but often, they don’t help the students most in need of support.
This week in Thera-Scholars, we’re shifting from nagging to noticing.
We’re helping kids identify:
- What pulls their attention
- What helps them return
- What success looks like — even for one moment of redirection
The tool? 🌟 The Focus Stars Visual Tracker — a simple, low-pressure way to build self-monitoring around attention and celebrate moments of focus without shame.
Why This Matters:
Students with attention challenges (including ADHD, anxiety, or trauma responses):
❌ Often don’t notice they’ve been distracted
❌ May feel embarrassed or annoyed when reminded
❌ Struggle to “just focus” without a strategy
When we help them track what helps them come back, they begin to:
✅ Build metacognition
✅ Develop positive attention habits
✅ Regain confidence in their ability to re-focus

This Week’s Tool: Focus Stars Visual Tracker
This flexible tool helps students:
- Track “return to focus” moments
- Learn their own attention rhythms
- Notice patterns (e.g., “I get distracted when I’m tired”)
Great for:
🎯 Writing sessions
🎯 Independent tasks
🎯 Homework or long lessons
🎯 Co-regulation time
📝 On Friday, students reflect on what distracted them — and what helped them return.
