Feelings Are Messengers, Not Monsters
Helping your child listen to their emotions instead of fearing them
Have you ever seen your child explode with a big feeling… and freeze in shame right after?
That moment — the “Why did I do that?” moment — is where emotional understanding begins.
This week, we’re introducing your child to the idea that feelings are just messengers.
They’re not problems.
They’re not dangerous.
They don’t mean your child is being “naughty” or “too much.”
They’re simply trying to tell us something important.
💬 What if your child believed:
- “Anger is telling me I need a boundary.”
- “Sadness is telling me I lost something I cared about.”
- “Fear is trying to keep me safe — even if I don’t need it right now.”
When kids learn that emotions are there to help, they don’t have to fight, fear, or bury them. They can listen, reflect, and respond — in safer, kinder ways.
This week’s tool: The Messenger Map
It turns tricky emotions into letters Dash helps decode.
Children learn to:
- Spot what the feeling is
- Ask: “What is this feeling trying to tell me?”
- Write or draw what the feeling might need
This builds emotional insight without needing to fix the feeling right away — it’s enough to listen.

Try This at Home:
📬 Print the Messenger Map (coming Tuesday!)
Sit with your child and gently wonder together:
“What feeling showed up today?”
“What was it trying to tell you?”
“What might it need?”
📚 Use characters or toys
Ask: “What message do you think Dash got when he felt mad/sad/worried?”
💬 Model your own “messages”
“I felt frustrated earlier — I think my feeling was telling me I needed a break.”
🖍️ Let them express non-verbally
Kids can draw, circle, or even colour-code their messenger if words are too hard at first.
