Encouraging Kids to Take Ownership of Their Progress

Encouraging Kids to Take Ownership of Their Progress

When children feel like they have a say in their therapy journey, everything changes. Engagement improves, confidence grows, and progress becomes more meaningful. Rather than therapy being something that’s “done to them,” children who are active participants feel more motivated, more involved, and more in control of their own growth.

But how do we help kids take ownership without overwhelming them? It starts with small shifts that give them a voice, a choice, and a sense of achievement.

1️⃣ Let Children Track Their Progress in Creative Ways

Children often respond best to visual, hands-on tools. Giving them a simple way to see their own progress helps them stay motivated and proud of what they’ve achieved.

✔ Use sticker charts, goal checklists, or progress trackers
✔ Encourage them to draw or write about how they feel before and after a session
✔ Try colour-coded journals, visuals, or even simple progress “maps” where they move closer to a goal with each session

When kids can see their growth in real time, it reinforces that they are the ones making it happen.

2️⃣ Offer Choices in How They Approach Challenges

Giving kids choice and control over parts of their therapy encourages buy-in and independence. It’s not about letting go of structure—it’s about building flexibility into how we reach goals.

✔ Let them choose between two tasks that support the same skill
✔ Ask how they’d prefer to practise something (e.g. through drawing, role play, or games)
✔ Give them options on when and how to take breaks

Even small decisions make a big impact. A child who chooses how they want to participate is more likely to stay engaged and push through challenges.

3️⃣ Reinforce That They Are an Active Participant

Language matters. Instead of saying “Today we’re going to do this,” try “What do you think we should work on today?”

✔ Reflect back their wins: “You chose to try again—that made a big difference.”
✔ Help them notice when their decisions have positive outcomes
✔ Encourage them to set one small goal for each session

Ownership builds confidence. When kids see that their effort leads to progress, they feel more capable and more willing to keep going.
