Calm the Body, Then the Brain
Why your child might need to move, stretch or squeeze before they can talk.
Have you ever tried to reason with your child in the middle of a meltdown — and gotten nowhere? That’s not because they’re ignoring you. It’s because their thinking brain is offline when their body is overwhelmed.
This week in Thera-Scholars, we’re introducing a crucial skill: calming the body first, so kids can come back to calm, connection, and communication.
We use Dash’s Calm-Down Menu — a playful, sensory-based menu of options that helps your child discover what helps their body feel safe again.
Why “body-first” calming works
When emotions run high, children don’t start with thoughts — they start with physical sensations:
- Racing heart
- Tight chest
- Hot cheeks
- Fidgety hands
- Frozen feet
Trying to talk through big feelings when their body is still revving is like trying to build a house in a storm. We help kids learn that it’s okay to move through feelings with their body first.
Dash’s Calm-Down Menu includes:
🌀 Dragon Breaths (slow, deep belly breathing)
❄️ Cold water splash or a cool washcloth
🐾 Animal walks (bear crawl, frog hop, etc.)
🏃♂️ Star jumps or wall push-ups
🎧 Soothing sounds or favourite music
🌈 Focus on a colour scavenger hunt
Your child gets to choose what works for them — giving them a sense of control and safety at the same time.

How can you help at home?
🛋️ Create a “Calm-Down Corner” with soft textures, breathing tools, or visual supports
📝 Print the Calm-Down Menu and let your child decorate it — they’re more likely to use something they helped design
👀 Model it yourself: “My body feels tense. I’m going to do some shoulder rolls first.”
🌟 Celebrate attempts, not perfection: “You knew you needed to move your body — that’s amazing self-awareness.”
What if they refuse in the moment?
That’s okay. You can plant seeds when they’re not upset — make it part of daily routines, play, or even bedtime rituals. The more familiar it feels, the more likely they’ll reach for it when it counts.
