Calm Starts with Now

Calm Starts with Now

Helping your child feel safe by noticing what’s around them.

Big feelings can be like storms — fast, overwhelming, and hard to explain. When your child is swept up in worry, frustration, or sensory overload, they often need something stronger than words: they need an anchor.

That’s where grounding comes in.

This week in Thera-Scholars, we’re teaching kids to pause, look around, and reconnect with the here and now using Dash’s simple 5-4-3-2-1 strategy.

What is grounding — and why does it work?

Grounding helps shift your child’s focus away from racing thoughts and back into their body and environment.

It uses the senses to gently bring attention to what’s real, right now — which helps:

  • Slow breathing
  • Lower stress
  • Rebuild safety in the body
  • Reduce emotional overwhelm

For many kids, this tool is especially helpful after something scary, frustrating, or unfamiliar.

Dash’s 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Steps:

🖼️ 5 things you can see
✋ 4 things you can touch
👂 3 things you can hear
👃 2 things you can smell
👅 1 thing you can taste (or one long, deep breath)

It’s a mini mindfulness routine — done with the body, not just the brain.

How to make grounding kid-friendly:

🌈 Turn it into a game:
“Let’s play ‘Dash Detective’ — how many blue things can you see?”

🖍️ Get visual:
Use pictures, drawings, or photos to guide each sense.

🧸 Keep it playful:
Try it while lying on a rug, snuggling with a soft toy, or sitting in a favourite calm-down corner.

💬 Practise when calm:
The more familiar this tool feels, the easier it is to use when feelings get big.

Bonus Tip: Make a Grounding Kit

Include textured items (like squishy balls, feathers), smell jars (vanilla, lavender), calming music, and favourite snacks. Keep it in a box or backpack for outings, car rides, or school transitions.
