Body Clues — Where Feelings Begin

Body Clues — Where Feelings Begin

Helping kids listen to their bodies before feelings get too big

You know that moment your child suddenly bursts into tears or shouts — and you’re left wondering, “Where did that come from?”
Often, the answer is: their body already knew.

This week, we’re helping kids tune in to the early signs of emotional overwhelm — the body’s way of whispering before it starts shouting.

Dash, our wise water dragon, teaches children that their tummy butterflies, clenched fists, racing heart or shaky legs aren’t just random. They’re body clues.
And when kids learn to notice and name these clues early, they build the foundation for emotional regulation — before feelings turn into outbursts.

What Are Body Clues?

Body clues are physical signs that let us know a feeling is starting to build. These might include:

  • A tight jaw when your child is frustrated
  • Fluttery tummy when they’re anxious
  • Wriggly feet when they’re excited or overwhelmed
  • Hot cheeks when they’re embarrassed

By helping your child connect the dots between body and emotion, you’re giving them a way to recognise and respond to feelings early — instead of reacting when it’s already too big.

Try This at Home:

🧍 Use Dash’s Body Clues Poster (coming Tuesday!)
Your child can draw, trace, or colour where they feel certain emotions in their body.

💬 Model your own clues
“I notice my shoulders get tight when I feel stressed — I think I need a stretch break.”

🎨 Play “Body Detective”
Use toys, role play, or storytime to spot when a character’s body shows how they feel.

👂 Practise checking in
“Let’s ask our body: how’s it feeling today?” This builds quiet awareness without pressure.
