Why do animal assisted therapy?
Animal assisted therapy promotes engagement and motivation through the inclusion of animals in the sessions. Individual goals can be addressed in the group environment, such as improved physical, social, emotional or sensory function.
What activities are covered?
Activities include (according to the interest of the young people):
- Assistance Dog activities/training (including local outings ie to Planet Arcade/Westfield Shopping Centre)
- Equine (horse) activities such as grooming and horse care
- Cat cafe visits (venue requires ages 7+ and vaccinated)
- Marine life (Scarborough volcanic rock pools with crabs)
- Bird and turtle watching and photography (ie Lake Eden; annual Clontarf Pelican Park 10am session)
- Bat spotting at Redcliffe Botanical Gardens (annual 5pm Winter session – weekdays only)
- White Ridge Farm visits
- Bribie Island Butterfly House (annual Wednesday session)
- Animal art (including digital art), craft, and lego
- Animal welfare advocacy.
Run for an hour per fortnight with our Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Exercise Physiologist or Allied Health Assistants/Therapy Assistants.
